Ialysos (or Trianda) was the birth place of Diagoras, the famous Olympic champion. It is located on the bay of the same name, which is protected from the strong southerley winds. The pre-Hellenic name indicates the very old history of Ialysos. First Minoans, and then Mycenaean traders, colonized this sheltered region and they built a great city. Later the dDorian inhabitants of Ialysos dominated the northern part of Rhodes and they created the strongest city-state on the island.
